Death's Bride- Prologue

The sounds of the rushing nurses filled the sterile white hospital room as Doctors attended to the laboring mother, urging her to hold on a little longer. She looks sickly, her skin pale and her body a little too thin everywhere but her belly, fighting as she weakly grips her husband's hand with every push. In the shadows across the room stands a looming figure they can't see, Death. He watches helplessly as he waits, fingering his billowing cloak anxiously and gripping his towering scythe a little tighter.

"This has to be the worst part of the job." He thinks, his expression mournful as he watches the hustle.

A cheer erupts as the fragile child's cries fill the room, but it is quickly replaced with shouts of fear as the mother's smile starts to drift away, her eyes slipping closed as the husband shouts for her to fight to stay. The nurses and doctors rushed around for a minute, attempting to revive her with desperate shouts. He watches her soul part from her body, floating above the bed in a blue haze, it looked like her, but healthy and undamaged. He steps forward with a sigh, touching a finger to the chest of the hovering silhouette.

"Hello there, Ma'am." He says somberly as he watches her stand, looking around until she spots the red-headed child in a bundle of blankets being handed to her sobbing father.

"Oh- did I- oh no." The woman gasps in horror, putting her hand over her mouth as she looks back up at death, her eyes shining with tears she could never shed.

"Yes. You may stay for a minute, but then we must go." The lump in his throat chokes his voice slightly as his eyes fasten to the infant, unable to look away. That poor girl would grow up without a mother in this cruel world, this death didn't feel like a mercy to any of them. But there was something else... something about that child. Whatever it was, it intrigued him greatly. He doesn't want to leave as long as she is here, he wishes to follow her father out of the hospital and home. But he can't right now, shaking it off as he offers a hand to the soul of her mother, leading her to the portal of smoke on the wall. He steals one last glance at the girl before stepping through, vanishing when it closes behind him.
